Making Movies

Introduction

This particular project begins to work on the idea of metaphor and symbol. More importantly, it asks you to think more and more about the nature of the themes in the work, and how they get represented.

I am not interested in being faithful to the details of the book, only to the themes.

Assignment

In groups of three, please do the following tasks.

      1. Describe the Setting:
      2. Describe the characters
      3. Block out the action

Setting

Imagine you are watching this in the theater or on television. What is in the setting? What props are on hand for the characters? Why are those props important?

Otherwise: What camera angles will you use?

When will you cut to a new scene?

Characters

Again, imagine this is a play or a movie. Who would you cast in the roles? How would you costume them?

How would you light them?

Blocking

Blocking means the actions that the actors are doing. In other words, how are they standing, how do they move and why do they act the way that they do?

I have photocopied selections of the text in order to help out.

Other thoughts: Is there a musical score behind the action? Background Noise? Explain.

Where do you go from here?

After you have successfully envisioned this scene, pick one of the following activities for the group.
