Newspapers

Introduction

Overall, we study literature to make our own lives better. The patterns and ideas that we find inside the books and poems we read are the same patterns and ideas that we see everyday. We all have been Jane Eyre and we have all been Georgiana.

Semester Assignment

At the end of the semester, I will ask you to create a newspaper from a day in the year 2050. This newspaper will need to be realistic and include at least the following sections.

  • National
  • International
  • Local
  • Sports
  • Features
  • Arts
  • Classifieds
  • Cartoons (political and strip)
  • Op-Ed

Every part of the newspaper will reflect your opinions on Gender.

You will need to show and defend your paper in a defense.

Two Week Assignment

By November 1, you and your group will need to assemble, by way of clippings, a current newspaper where every article reflects current views and issues on Gender. You will need to defend this.

Schedule

The following dates are homework dates for assembling the paper.

  1. Mission Statement: October 13
  2. Basic Layout: October 14
  3. International News: October 15
  4. National/Local: October 19
  5. Op-Ed/Features: October 21
  6. Sports/Arts: October 22
  7. Classifieds: October 26
  8. Cartoons: October 27
  9. Defense Ready: October 29

Defense

A defense is an oral presentation where you explain your paper. Unlike a presentation, a defense usually involves being peppered with questions.

You will need to be able to defend and explain any part of your paper and any choices you made.

You will need to speak clearly, without stammer or defect.

Mission Statement

You will be in a group of three other people. All of you will need to agree on your views and opinions about men, women and gender.

Your mission statement should be in the form of four or five sentences that begin "We believe…"

Alternatives

As I look at this assignment, I think it would be easier to do this as a web page and not as a clip and paste newspaper. A web page would involve cutting and pasting links and placing them in appropriate places.

A magazine format, like Time or Newsweek, would also be effective.

I think a wedding page with announcements would be pretty interesting.

Pictures are not specified, but would improve the project immeasurably.

We will create a rubric on Wednesday, October 12.
