Lady Diana

Introduction

I don’t know how much you really care about the death of Lady Diana. However, these essays show some good writing techniques and pretty strong arguments.

Assignment

Read the four articles on Princess Di’s death then,

    1. Answer the corresponding questions,
    2. For each article, summarize the argument in one sentence,
    3. Write a one page response to all four articles that uses all four of those sentences and states your opinion.

Correspond-ing questions

Answer the following questions thoroughly.

    1. Underline any specifics that are in the article.
    2. Circle any Hyperbole.
    3. Retitle each article.

Summary Sentence

Often you can get the pith of an article boiled down into one sentence. In order to do this, you need to read the article and think carefully about what the article has to say. For the most part, the sentence needs to be fairly complicated since you need to account for most of the argument in the article.

For example, if you were going to summarize the Barnicle article, it might be fair to say: "Princess Di was a well-publicized airhead who died tragically, but she is less important than other good people who are unheralded, but also die tragically."

It would not be fair to say: "Princess Di was an airhead."

Journal Entry

For the journal entry, you need to include your four summary sentences as well as your own opinion.

Try to use specifics and some hyperbole.

Group Process

In order to do this effectively in a group, you should do the following

    1. Both of you should read two articles. As you do so, underline and circle where appropriate.
    2. Each of you should take out a blank piece of paper.
    3. Each of you will tell the other what another title for the piece is and what your summary sentence is.
    4. You should help your partner phrase the speech completely.

(In doing this, you should be able to convey to your partner the main points of your articles without your partner needing to read your articles.)

    5. You should then write your journal entry.

From there…

I may ask you to rewrite your journal entry in order to post it on either the Herald’s or the Globe’s message boards.
