Introduction

As we look to the final, finish Viking, and finish MOV, I want to bring us back to the opening questions of the course.

Laws of Power

I set these up as power laws. Are they accurate?

People want to be in groups and want to avoid solitude.

Power is the ability to make people do what they ordinarily wouldn’t do?

Questions

Think about the following questions in regards to the works, Viking, and the final.

      1. Under what circumstances will people do things that they wouldn’t ordinarily do?
      2. Suppose you want a man to give you his car. What forces can you use to compel him to do it?
      3. How does choice of language convey a power relationship?
      4. What is the difference between a moral and an immoral law?
      5. Is it true that the only place for the just man is in prison?
      6. How can laughter be powerful? How do novelists use it?
      7. Are people more motivated by fear or by love? By rewards or by threat of punishment?
      8. Should parents try to raise strong individuals or good team players? Which one is more important to emphasize.
