Odyssey Quote Quiz
Read the following quotes,
identify who said them and why they are important.
The quotes come from:
Helen, sons of Menelaus, Proteus, Penelope, Telemachus, a suitor, Minerva, and Nestor
- "Eurymachus, and you other suitors, I shall say no more,
and entreat you no further, for the gods and the people of Ithaca now know
my story. Give me, then, a ship and a crew of twenty men to take me hither
and thither, and I will go to Sparta and to Pylos in quest of my father
who has so long been missing. Some one may tell me something, or (and
people often hear things in this way) some heaven-sent message may direct
me.
- "I see that you are going to be a great hero some day,
since the gods wait upon you thus while you are still so young. This can
have been none other of those who dwell in heaven than Jove's redoubtable
daughter, the Trito-born, who showed such favour towards your brave father
among the Argives."
- "I see the likeness just as you do. His hands and feet are
just like Ulysses'; so is his hair, with the shape of his head and the
expression of his eyes. Moreover, when I was talking about Ulysses, and
saying how much he had suffered on my account, tears fell from his eyes,
and he hid his face in his mantle."
- "Menelaus, there are some strangers come here, two men,
who look like sons of Jove. What are we to do? Shall we take their horses
out, or tell them to find friends elsewhere as they best can?"
- "Sir," said he, "it is I, as you will shortly
learn, who have convened you, for it is I who am the most aggrieved. I
have not got wind of any host approaching about which I would warn you,
nor is there any matter of public moment on which I would speak. My
grieveance is purely personal, and turns on two great misfortunes which
have fallen upon my house. The first of these is the loss of my excellent
father, who was chief among all you here present, and was like a father to
every one of you; the second is much more serious, and ere long will be
the utter ruin of my estate. The sons of all the chief men among you are
pestering my mother to marry them against her will.
- "Some things, Telemachus," answered XXXXXXXX,
"will be suggested to you by your own instinct, and heaven will
prompt you further; for I am assured that the gods have been with you from
the time of your birth until now."
- "Telemachus, what are you talking about? Heaven has a long
arm if it is minded to save a man; and if it were me, I should not care
how much I suffered before getting home, provided I could be safe when I
was once there. I would rather this, than get home quickly, and then be
killed in my own house as Agamemnon was by the treachery of Aegisthus and
his wife. Still, death is certain, and when a man's hour is come, not even
the gods can save him, no matter how fond they are of him."
- A third Achaean leader is still at sea, alive, but hindered
from returning.

My dears, heaven has been pleased to try me with more
affliction than any other woman of my age and country. First I lost my brave
and lion-hearted husband, who had every good quality under heaven, and whose
name was great over all Hellas and middle Argos, and now my darling son is at
the mercy of the winds and waves, without my having heard one word about his
leaving home. You hussies, there was not one of you would so much as think of
giving me a call out of my bed, though you all of you very well knew when he
was starting. If I had known he meant taking this voyage, he would have had to
give it up, no matter how much he was bent upon it, or leave me a corpse behind
him- one or other. Now, however, go some of you and call old Dolius, who was
given me by my father on my marriage, and who is my gardener. Bid him go at
once and tell everything to Laertes, who may be able to hit on some plan for
enlisting public sympathy on our side, as against those who are trying to
exterminate his own race and that of Ulyss
- Telemachus, insolent braggart that you are, how dare you try to
throw the blame upon us suitors? It is your mother's fault not ours, for
she is a very artful woman. This three years past, and close on four, she
has been driving us out of our minds, by encouraging each one of us, and
sending him messages without meaning one word of what she says.
